USU Soccer clinches the 2nd seed in the WAC tournament!!!!

There were two games over the weekend on Chuck and Gloria Bell Field.

Shantel Flanary had two goals, Lauren Hansen had one, Heather Pond also scored and little Jamee Dyches scored her first collegiate goal on a screamer from about 20 yards out on the left side to the far post. It was a brilliant goal. Hats off to Dyches for her first collegiate goal - in fact it was the goal that clinched the WAC tournament berth for the Aggies.

The Aggies are now sitting solidly in second place after these two critical home wins. Here are the seeds in this weekend's tournament:

1. San Jose State
2. Utah State
3. Boise State
4. Nevada
5. New Mexico State
6. Fresno State

Hawai'i, Louisiana Tech, and Idaho did not qualify for the conference tournament.

The format for this tournament is similar to the NFL playoffs. The #1 and #2 seeds earn a bye. No. 3 will play no. 6 and no. 4 will play no. 5 in the first round. After the first round, No. 2 will play against the winner of the 3/6 matchup (Boise/Fresno) and no. 1 will face the winner of the 4/5 matchup. The winner of those two matches will advance to the final match, and then a winner will be decided.

So, gear up ladies and gentlemen!!! It's fall tournament time, and the Aggies are looking to get it done this year after falling in double overtime last year.

The only team that is in this tournament that USU has lost to is the fourth seed, Nevada. USU beat Boise on the road this year and Fresno at home, both by a margin of 1-0. USU is definitely capable of executing and getting it done. The only item that remains in this year's mission to greatness is three straight wins. No more ties, ladies and gents... Wins and Losses only.

USU Soccer Wins 2 on the Road

USU won two games over the weekend in the Gem State. Natalie Norris sealed the deal against Boise State, and Erin Salmon's golden overtime goal in Moscow put away the Idaho Vandals. USU is now 2-1 in WAC play and comes home this week to host two Californian foes. Fresno State will suit up against our Aggies on Friday, and San Jose State will take to Bell Field on Sunday.

USU Soccer lost to ISU today. Bummer. Here's what Coach Heather Cairns had to say about it.

USU Soccer Earns 100th Win

Aggie Soccer split their matches over the weekend, losing to UTSA on Friday and Dominating Houston Baptist a la a good old-fashioned Aggie Basketball whooping.

I wrote an article for The Statesman on the loss. My associate Steve Crass wrote about the win. I cannot post it here because of a conflict of interests with The Statesman, which really is lame, because the article that was published in today's paper is not on the website, and I don't want to get in trouble at work... So, I must forego the posting of the article until either The Statesman publishes it online or allows me to publish my own work.

In the meantime, here's what the USU Athletic Deptartment had to say about it.

The entire team is totally psyched about the 100th win for the USU soccer program in it's history. Overall, USU soccer has a losing record as a program, but this is a huge step for the program.

I want to give a huge shoutout to Shantel Flanary who scored two goals and had an assist in the dominant performance against Houston. Stefani Shiozaki also scored her second collegiate goal, and given the fact that Houston was held to one goal, also I'm giving props out to the defensive line in the backfield - Linsday Smart, Sidney Porter-Garner, Natalie Norris, and all the other Aggie defenders - for their excellent performance in this weekends matches. When you've got a goal differential of +3, that means that things are clicking, despite the split games.

Keep fighting Ags! You've got a huge match this week in Washington! Do Cache Valley proud! We believe in you!

Lindsey Smart - A Smart Girl

Lindsey Smart is one awesome young lady and an excellent captain for the soccer team. I had the privelege of interviewing her and writing a feature article for the Statesman about her.

Also, she's really, really good at soccer and I continue to look forward to watching this team play in the WAC. USU soccer has the chance to take down the No. 21 team in the nation, the Oklahoma State Cowgirls.
